Logitech z523 is the Best Reviewed System in its Class

Logitech z523

The Logitech z523 2.1 speaker system is one of the most highly reviewed systems I have come across. You really don’t have to even take my word for it, the internet is full of great reviews from real consumers who are enjoying all of the features of this product.

But I encourage you to keep reading if you are considering purchasing this system because you will get a lot of great value out of this review, including where to find this system at the best price.

2.0 and 2.1

Logitech z523 2.0Logitech z523
The Logitech z523 is a 2.1 speaker system. However, it does have a sister model (z520) that is a 2.0 system. The 2.0 option comes with two forward facing speakers, like you would place on either side of a computer monitor. the 2.1 system has two satellite speakers and a subwoofer! The 2.1 option is really the way to go and if you watch the video at the bottom of this post then you will know why.

The 2.1 option includes the two speakers as well as a subwoofer. The subwoofer is really top of the line. I would say you could spend a thousand dollars on a subwoofer and still not get the quality bass you get out of this speaker.

360 Degree Sound Technology

The two desk speakers include Logitech’s “360 Degree Sound Technology”. This is a really cool feature, but it can be misleading. Let me start by telling you what it is. The Logitech z523 desk speakers each have a forward and a backward facing speaker. Normal speakers in this class project sound only in one direction (forward).

Normal Speakers

Normal Speakers

Some users claim that they don’t notice the “360 degrees of sound thing”. First let me explain that “360 degrees of sound” does not mean that this will be a surround sound system. However, the reason some user’s may not “get” the whole 360 degrees of sound thing is because of their speaker placement in relation to where they are sitting.

Sound from the Logitech z523 speakers is projected in the forward direction just like any other speaker system. It is also projected out of the back of the speakers. If the speakers are situated close to a wall or a corner, as would typically be the case for a desktop computer or a TV, the sound waves coming out of the back of the speakers will bounce off of the walls. The effect is that a “sphere” of sound is created.

Logitech z523 Multi Directional Speakers

Logitech z523 Multi Directional Speakers

Now, if you are close enough to the speakers, particularly in the area where the forward facing sound waves and the reflecting sound waves interact with each other, you will notice the 360 degree sound technology. If you are in a large room and are far from the speakers, you will most likely not notice the 360 degree sound technology. In a large open room the 360 degree effect will dissipate quickly and you will not notice it if you aren’t close to the speakers. That being said, there is another aspect to the 360 degree speaker technology.

Let’s say that you need these speakers for an area that is in the center of a room. With the 360 degree speaker technology you will be able to clearly hear the sound no matter where you are in the room, you aren’t limited to just being in front of the speakers. The reason for this is because sound is coming from the front and back of the system!!!

The Unbeatable Subwoofer

Logitech z523 Subwoofer

Ever user review I have read agrees with me on this point, and you will too. The Logitech z523 subwoofer is remarkable! A friend of mine, who is very wealthy, has his own private theater room. This room has everything from acoustically engineered wall panels, to big comfy theater seats, to a top of the line surround sound system.

The surround sound system along must have cost him over $10,000 USD. What I look for in bass is a clear, quality, sound that will hit you in the chest when you want it to. This really adds a lot to movies, music, and video games. I also don’t like the bass sound to muddy up the overall sound quality, which a lot of lower quality subwoofers do.

The Logitech z523 subwoofer is clear and crisp, yet extremely powerful. All of the reviews I read claim that if you turn the bass over 12 o’clock, you will have your neighbors knocking at your front door. It is THAT powerful.

Oh yea…My friend would probably disagree with me on this, but in my opinion this subwoofer blows his $10,000 sound system’s subwoofers out of the water. Without a doubt, this is my favorite feature of this speaker system.

Just a side note: When you are taking the subwoofer out of the box, be careful to not poke a whole in the cone. It is a downward facing speaker that isn’t covered. It actually makes sense. Once the subwoofer is sitting on the floor, you don’t have to worry about it getting damaged. It is just taking it out of the box that could be an issue. Be warned.

Easy to access Input/Output Jacks

Logitech z523 Inputs

Whether you plan on using these speakers for your gaming console, computer, TV, iPad, etc., you will find that the simple to access input/output jacks are a great feature. The input/output jacks are located on the speaker itself, not on the subwoofer or somewhere inconvenient to access.

The input to the speaker is independent of your computer, or other input source (a true aux input). This means that you can leave the speakers plugged into the main source, while still plugging in your iPod, X Box, etc.

What, No Remote???

My biggest issue with the Logitech z523 speaker system is that it doesn’t come with a remote control. When I’m using them at my desktop, it really isn’t a big deal because I can just reach up adjust the sound knob a bit.

However, I bought a set for my bedroom and quickly realized that these speakers were lacking a remote. Then I realized that I can use my TV remote…Problem SOLVED! Another Logitech z523 user actually told me to get a set of regular audio composite cables and use them to go into the auxiliary input on the speakers. I can set my Logitech z523 speakers where I want them, then use my TV to remote to adjust the sound level from there (up, down, or mute).

Where to Find the Best Value on the Logitech z523 Speaker System Like I said before, this speaker system is the best in its class. For the money, you will not find any other comparable speaker system. If you do, let me know because I have looked and can’t find one (I’m kind of a sound nut).

In fact, you could end up spending hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars before getting a system that can touch the Logitech z523. The best thing is, this system is extremely affordable. I’ve provided a link below with some of the best prices I have found for this unit.

Thanks for checking out my logitech z523 review. I know that third party reviews can often be misleading, so right from the get go I want to let you know that I have read through hundreds of other reviews on the Logitech z523 and they speak for themselves. ==>CLICK HERE IF YOU ARE JUST LOOKING FOR THE BEST PRICES ON THE LOGITECH Z523<==

The Logitech z523 speaker system is by far the best in its class. Similar 2.1 systems (two speakers and a subwoofer) just can’t come close to the price, quality, and functionality of this system. All of the user reviews I read agree with me!

Premium Bass Quality

I will start out this Logitech z523 review with my favorite feature, the bass quality. The subwoofer is specially engineered to project sound DOWN! This means that you feel the bass and hear it in a clear, big, and clean sound.

Most subwoofers I’ve heard that are around this price range are muddy and distort when you turn them up too loud. The 6.5″ pressure driver ensures that the sound is always clean and never distorted. This means that your video games and movies are more intense than ever before.

Forty watts of power may not seem like much to you, but let me warn you. If you turn crank the bass past midway, you may end up having your neighbors knocking on your door. That is how much power this subwoofer has. There is literally way more power in this system than you will ever need for home entertainment purposes.

Multi-Directional Sound

Normal speakers are limited to sound projecting out in one direction. As you know, this is because they only have speakers in the front. If you are not directly in front of the speakers, it is likely that you won’t be able to hear them, or the sound will be muffled and low quality.

One of the great features of the Logitech z523 system is that it has speakers in the front and back of the towers. What does this do? Regardless of where you are in the room, you are getting clear crisp audio straight from the speakers. No muffled sounds!

Having a speaker system engineered like this can also give the effect of surround sound if you are sitting in the right spot and the speakers are situated near a wall or some other similar surface.

The sound waves coming out of the back speaker will reflect off of the wall and sort of blend with the sound coming out of the forward facing cone. The combined sound waves form a sphere of sound. If you are sitting within this sphere, you will get the sense that sound is coming from all around you!!! This is indeed a very cool feature of these speakers!

The problem is that some users believe that no matter how their speakers are oriented they will be getting this surround sound effect. For example, in one Logitech z523 review I read the consumer had the speaker system set up with his TV.

While he praised the sound quality of the speaker system, and absolutely loved the bass, he said that he didn’t really “get” the omnidirectional sound feature. I’m just guessing here, and I’ll bet I’m right…this guy wasn’t sitting very close to his TV (within the “sphere”).

Understand that the speaker system won’t produce true 7.1 surround sound or anything like that. It WILL give you a great quality sound, and if you are close enough it will appear to be surround sound, but don’t expect a $5,000 system here.

Exceptional Price

On that note, let’s talk price. I’ve looked at a lot of different systems. I’ve researched systems ranging from $50 to $5,000. Dollar for dollar, you can’t beat the Logitech z523. I’d even venture to say that the subwoofer’s bass quality can compete with some of those $1,000+ systems. It is really that high quality!

When you buy the Logitech z523, you really are getting way more than you pay for. I read a Logitech z523 review that put it best: “best value for your money on the market”. I’ve looked around all over the internet for a place to find the best deal on this system and I’ve provided you a link below. Enjoy!

Logitech Speaker System z523 – Features and Benefits

Logitech Speaker System z523The Logitech Speaker system z523 is a great option for your desktop, TV, gaming console, or mp3 player. It literally has a ton of great features that blow away all of the speakers in its class.

The Logitech z523 speaker system falls into the 2.0/2.1 speaker class. This means that, with regards to 2.0, that there are two speakers for the mid-range and high-range sounds. 2.1 means that the system comes with a subwoofer for low-range sounds.

==>CLICK HERE IF WANT GREAT PRICES ON THE LOGITECH Z523<==

The speaker system is availabe in both 2.0 and 2.1. However, I recommend the 2.1 version because it really doesn’t cost much more and the subwoofer is what makes this system unbeatable for sound quality and value.

Logitech Speaker System z523 is Omnidirectional

Logitech has put its own 360 degree sound technology into these speakers. What does this mean? This means that the speakers project sound out in all directions.

Of course, there are limitations to this. You aren’t going to get 7.1 surround sound out of two small speakers. However, no matter where you are in the room in relation to the speakers, you will get great quality sound.

Normal speakers only project out the front. If you aren’t directly in front of normal speakers, you won’t get the full quality sound of the speakers. The reason is because the sound waves have to travel through the room and bounce off of the walls in order to get to wherever you are. As the sound waves travel, the dissipate and are disrupted by other sounds in the room, ambient vibration, etc.

The Logitech Speaker System z523 has speaker cones in the front and the back of desk towers. The sound projects out of the front and the back. Thus, no matter where you are in relation to the speakers, you are hearing the true quality sound of the speakers, as if you were sitting directly in front of them.

If you are sitting directly in front of them, and the speakers are fairly close to a surface, you will a notice a surround sound-type effect. The sound waves coming out of the back of the speaker interact with those coming from the front of the speaker to create a sphere of sound. If you are sitting near this sphere, the experience will be similar to surround sound!

Subwoofer Bass Quality

As I mentioned above, the Logitech Speaker System z523 subwoofer that comes with the 2.1 version of this system can’t be touched by any other product in its class. The bass is very clear and crisp, not muddy like most similar subwoofers, and more powerful than you could imagine.

In my opinion, when you are watching an action or suspense movie, having a good sound system with a quality subwoofer makes the movie way better. Why do you think movie theatres spend so much money on their sound systems?

I especially like to feel the bass when I am watching these types of movies, or even when I am listening to music. You will not have a problem feeling the bass that comes out of this woofer! CAUTION: If you crank the bass up past around 11 o’clock, expect your neighbors to complain. It is THAT powerful.

You could really spend around $1,000 dollars on a premium entertainment system and not get bass quality like this. Every single Logitech speaker system z523 review I have read agrees on this. The subwoofer is more at least 5 times the price of the entire 2.1 system.

Controlling the Volume When Watching TV

If you are going to be using the Logitech z523 system for your TV, you may be concerned about a remote control.

This system doesn’t come with a remote control like some of the more expensive sound systems. However, with a couple of cables you won’t need one.

==>CLICK HERE IF YOU ARE JUST LOOKING FOR THE PRICES ON THE LOGITECH Z523<==

Simply use a set of composite cables coming out of your TV into the auxiliary input on the speaker tower. Set up the sound levels on your speakers according to the level at which you normal watch TV or movies.

Using your TV remote, you can control the volume (up, down, or mute)! So really, the fact that these things don’t come with a remote control isn’t really that big of a deal. I mean, if you are using them with your desktop computer, then it shouldn’t be very hard for you to lean forward and turn a knob, right?

The Best Feature is the Price

If you have been reading this Logitech speaker system z523 review, then you probably know that there are a bunch of great features associated with this unit. What you may not imagine, is that one of the best features is the price.

I have found some great prices on these speakers and I am providing you the link below. Go grab yourself a pair of these speakers and enjoy premium sound quality at a great price!

Logitech z523| Customer Support

logitech z523The support staff behind the Logitech z523 speaker system is truly outstanding. In fact, Logitech is known for their great customer support!

Much can be said about a product based on the quality of customer support. A discourteous support staff can make the most high-end of products seem like garbage. Likewise, a great customer support staff can turn any product into gold.

One major aspect of my Logitech z523 review is considering how the company responds to customer problems. In general, if a company really stands behind their product, then they will provide their customers with replacements if something isn’t working as it should.

Something that stuck out in my mind as I was reading a Logitech z523 review was that nearly every issue that consumers had with the Logitech z523 speaker system was immediately taken care of by Logitech’s staff. In most cases, the solution was that Logitech promptly sent the customer a replacement system free of charge.

There are already so many great features about the Logitech z523 speaker system that customer support should really not even be a factor in your decision. It wasn’t in mine. I didn’t even know about the great level of customer support until I started reading reviews. Honestly, I have never experienced any problems with my z523 system that would require me to call customer support.

I do have many other Logitech products and have called their customer support line in the past. In my experience, there is no better company to deal with. They are always very fast and very courteous. They understand and appreciate the fact that we have spent our money on their products and are grateful for our purchases.

For those of you on the fence about whether to go with the Logitech z523 system or not, I just wanted to let you know that an added bonus to this system is the level of support that comes with any Logitech product.

Logitech z523 – What Other Users are Saying | Part 2

logitech z 523In my previous post I started talking about some of the positive and negatives based on some other Logitech z523 reviews I read. In this post, I will continue to go over a few important points these other users bring up.

Positive – Great Input Options
I think enough people got tired of buying speaker systems that didn’t have the built in headphone and auxiliary jacks. That is one of the things that everyone really likes about the Logitech z523 speaker system. These inputs are conveniently located on the side of the right satellite speaker.

I keep my system plugged into my TV. When I am playing video games, my wife makes me wear my headphones. I have a wireless headset with a remote receiver that I plug straight into the headphone jack on the satellite. With some of the other speaker systems in this class, you would have to unplug the speakers from the TV and plug the headphones into the auxiliary output on the TV (if there was one).

It is also nice to be able to plug an additional input into the speakers without having to unplug the TV. I mostly use my iPod, but you could also aux in from a DVD player or any other audio source, all without having to unplug a bunch of cables and move things around.

Positive – Built in Power Adapter
If you look behind my TV, you will see like 4 or 5 huge power adapters for various components of my entertainment system. The power adapter for the Logitech z523 is not one of them. The power adapter for this system is built into the subwoofer.

Many users commented on how this was a great feature. I looked down under my computer desk and sure enough, my Altec Lansing speakers have a GIANT power adapter taking up real estate under my desk. The sleek look of the Logitech system is really maintained by having the built in power system.

Negative – Low Humming Noise from Subwoofer
Some users report a low humming sound coming from the subwoofer. A few users actually called Logitech customer support and had their speakers replaced (free of charge, of course). I have never experienced this issue, but if I do, it is good to know that Logitech will replace the speakers for free.

In general, it seems as if the problem is a very low humming noise that comes from the subwoofer. Apparently you can’t hear it when you are listening to something. But when the audio cuts off, in between songs or during a silent part of a movie, the sound is noticeable.

Positive – Best Speaker System for the Price
The biggest selling point for me was the massive amounts of positive user reviews. Through reading these reviews, I definitely got the impression that this was the best bang for my buck. Now I know this to be true.

There are so many 2.1 speaker systems in this price range. Some of them have some pretty great features. However, in reading all of the reviews, I found that the Logitech z523 was the only speaker system that captured all of those features, and at a great price.

The system isn’t going to replace your $1,000 entertainment system. But if you are looking for a 2.1 system, chances are you aren’t looking to spend $1,000. You are looking for a great system at a great price. I think it is safe to say that your best bet is the Logitech z523. For more information on the features and functionality of this system, please check out my Logitech z523 review.

Logitech z523 – What Other Users are Saying | Part 1

logitech z523You know how I feel about the Logitech z523, especially if you have been reading some of my other posts. I thought it would be a good idea to cover what other folks are saying about this speaker system. I have read hundreds of reviews on these speakers and I am going to try my best to summarize them here.

Positive – Bass Quality
One consensus across the board about these speakers is regarding the amazing subwoofer. Practically every Logitech z523 review I read notes that the bass quality is excellent, especially for such a fairly priced speaker system.

I think the two complaints I heard were really just people looking for something bad to say. The first was that there is no cover over the downward facing speaker. This isn’t a problem during operation because the speaker is protected by the surface it is sitting on (i.e., the floor). The issue is when you are taking the speaker out of the box. Some people were poking holes in the speaker cone because they were trying to lift the subwoofer out of the box from the bottom. Solution: Pull the subwoofer out of the box from the sides, not the bottom. Simple as that!

The other negative I heard about the bass was that it is almost too powerful. One fellow warned that if you live in an apartment, you may want to go with something a little less powerful. While I agree that the bass is very powerful, it is also fully controllable. So if you are in a noise sensitive environment, you have the option of turning down the bass, along with the main volume!

Negatives – Built in Cables
Some users don’t really like the built in cable system that comes with the Logitech z523 system. I can totally understand this. For my setup, the built in cables are just right. However, I could see where having built in cables could be an issue, especially if the cables aren’t long enough for your particular setup. The Logitech cables are only 6’, so make sure that is enough for you.

It would probably be better if the cables were not built into the speakers. It would have been cool if Logitech would have used speaker jacks instead of the built in cable system. That way, if you needed a longer cable, you could simply buy one and plug it into the jack. If your cat chews through these cables, you’re going to need to buy a new set of speakers.
Like I said, this is one compliant, but I have not had an issue with it due to my specific setup.

I am planning on putting out another post covering some additional Logitech z523 user reviews, so stay tuned for part 2.

Logitech z523 | What to look for in a 2.1 Speaker System | Part II

Logitech z523This is a continuation of the previous post regarding what to look for when you are buying a set of speakers for your desktop, TV, or gaming application. I am specifically talking about speakers in the 2.0/2.1 calss, such as the Logitech z523.

My Favorite System is the Logitech z523==>Click here for the Best Price<==Buy Logitech z523 Now

Here are some other features you should pay attention to if you are speaker shopping.

Are the Satellite Speakers Weighted?

This may sound like a strange thing for me to say, but you wouldn’t believe the troubles having non-weighted satellite speakers may cause.

I have a laptop with a docking station at work. Since the laptop speakers aren’t all that great, I decided to buy a pair of inexpensive desktop speakers at Big Lots. The first thing I would note about these speakers is their awful sound. But I guess I shouldn’t complain because they were way better than the laptop speakers.

My absolute biggest problem with these speakers was how light they were. They had absolutely no weight at all, let alone towards the bottom. The slightest little touch would send them toppling all over my desk. You really want to find some speakers that will sit exactly where you intend for them to sit.

Do the Speakers Come with a Remote Control?

This is one of those options that I am not so sure about. It can almost be a pain to keep up with the remote controllers for me. However, I could see where it may come in handy. You can get some really big, high definition computer monitors right now for pretty cheap. Certainly way cheaper than a comparable TV. Also, a lot of people are starting to watch a lot of internet TV. I am partial to Boxee Box, but there is Google TV, Roku Player, etc.

For more than half the price of a decent TV and entertainment setup, you could get a large computer monitor, a 2.1 speaker system with a remote, and a Boxee Box or similar system. The remote is the missing piece of the puzzle. If you are looking for this setup, I would have to either recommend you get a 2.1 system that comes with a remote, or grab an internet TV box that does (like the Boxee Box).

This is just an overview of some of the things I look for in a speaker system. These are a few of the criteria I used when making my decision to pick up the Logitech z523 speaker system.

As I mentioned in this post, there are many other speaker systems available, but I like the Logitech z523 system and I think you will too.

Logitech z523 | What to look for in a 2.1 Speaker System | Part I

Logitech z523In this post I want to go over some of the things that I look for in a set of desktop speakers, such as the Logitech z523 speakers. There are some other great models out there that have similar features and benefits. I want to give you my opinion on what I look for!

I know there are many other models out there that probably meet my criteria, but I really like this set of speakers and I think you will too.

There are just a few really important things that you need to consider when you are picking up a set of speakers to use at your desktop computer, for gaming, or for your TV. I use the Logitech speakers for my entertainment area and my Altec Lansing speakers for my desktop.

The Altec Lansing speakers work great for the desktop. They have a decent sound quality, at least for anything I would ever need at my computer, and they have some good features. However, they would never work outside of a desktop environment, at least not for me. Here is the rundown of what you should look for.

Take a look at the control features before you purchase any speaker system. Here are some specifics that you will want to consider:

Does the system have a volume control knob?
Having the ability to control the volume right from the speakers is a great bonus. If decide to grab a set of speakers without this feature then you are going to have to rely on the volume controls of the input source (iPod, computer, TV, etc.).

This comes in handy especially for desktop applications when the controls are right there on the speaker next to the monitor. If you are in the middle of a conference call, game, movie, etc. you don’t have to mess with the Windows audio controller, you can simply lean over and turn the knob!

Does the system have frequency control knobs?
One of the biggest problems 2.1 speaker systems is that they are usually heavy on the bass. Generally, these systems don’t have much power and most of it is going straight to the subwoofers. So without some sort of way to control the bass levels, you aren’t going to be getting a very good listening experience.

It is also nice to be able to tweak the treble to blend with the bass, as I mentioned above. An even bigger bonus would be a mid range control. Honestly, I can’t think of a single affordable 2.1 system that has all of these features. The Logitech z523 system doesn’t have this functionality, but honestly it doesn’t need it due to its great out of the box tone blend. Like I said though, if the frequency blend sounds off out of the box, you always have the option to adjust the EQ from the input source.

There are several other options that I’d like to share with you, but it will have to wait until part two of this post, which should be up tomorrow. See you then!

My Logitech z523 Setup

Logitech z523My entertainment system consists of a 42” flat panel Toshiba LCD 1080p TV, a Sony Blu Ray player, a Boxee Box, a variety of gaming consoles, and the Logitech z523 speaker system.

I actually stumbled upon my Logitech z523 system due to an unfortunate accident. I was playing some of the old Mario games on my retro SNES console. We all know that those old games don’t have the best sound quality, and I had to CRANK the volume to be able to hear anything.

Later that night, my wife and I went to watch a movie. I can’t remember which movie it was, but the opening scene was apparently pretty loud. As soon as the scene hit, one of the speakers in the TV blew. Needless to say, I had to find an affordable option that would be good for music, movies, and gaming. We had to finish that movie in the bedroom on the small TV.

Unboxing the Logitech z523

We were out shopping the next day and I started looking around at some of the speaker systems, which is when I first saw the Logitech z523. Simply comparing the features listed on the box to other similar systems, I knew it was what I was looking for. The price was also very good, but I had a feeling I could do a lot better online.

I ordered the speaker system after reading a really great Logitech z523 review. It arrived a few days later. After hooking it up, I noticed that it needed a little tweaking to get it to sound right through the TV. You see, many movies and TV shows now a days are stuffed with a bunch of bass.

Your standard TV speakers don’t have the ability to pump out much bass. Normal surround sound systems have enough high end speakers and enough power to balance the highs and the lows very nicely. Right out of the box, the Logitech system had WAY too much bass for normal TV watching.

Settings for Optimum TV/Movie Watching

You might have the same issues that I had when you take your system out of the box and hook it up. The Logitech unit only has a control for volume and for bass. If you’ve been reading some of the other posts on this site then you know that the bass on this thing is kickin! However, if not managed correctly it will overtake all of the other sounds.

Dial the bass knob to about 10-11 o’clock. Turn the volume to an acceptable listening level. To make the system sound like butter, I use my TV audio settings. If you have any professional audio experience, then you know that a very standard equalizer setting is to make the EQ look like a smiley face. This won’t work for us. What we want to do is make the EQ look like a straight line going from the bottom left corner (bass) up to the top right corner (treble). These settings may need a little tweaking depending on the TV/DVD player you are using with your Logitech z523 speakers. For example, you may need to flatten the light out in the middle in order to balance the mid range.

If you aren’t familiar with these types of settings, or your TV doesn’t have a traditional EQ, then you will just want to go to your TV audio settings and find the option for low, mid, and high. Basically, you just want to make the low as low as possible. The mid range should be around 50%. The highs should be around 75-80%. This would basically be equivalent to have the EQ settings I described above.

I hope you enjoy your system as much as I have. Make sure you go and check out my Logitech z523 review to find out where to get the system for the best price.

Logitech z523 – Technical Specifications

Logitech z523

All About The Logitech z523 Speaker System’s Specs

The Logitech z523 Speaker system is a great option for desktop applications, as well as home entertainment and gaming.
In previous posts, I have discussed many of the features of the Logitech z523 system. Here I want to cover the technical specifications.

Power
The manufacturer lists the power for the system at 40 watts RMS. Back in the 70s there was a standard for audio equipment manufacturing that required a type of distortion test. The test is very complicated and I won’t go into any detail here, but basically it was this test that got everyone used to the term RMS.
RMS actually stands for “Root Mean Squared” and is a mathematical term that, in this case, is used to describe the square root of the average of the square of the measured power (mouthful, I know).
What I am really trying to say is, don’t pay any attention to the “RMS” thing. Just know that 40 watts of power is way more than you will ever need. It is enough to wake up your neighbor’s neighbors.

Frequency Response
The manufacturer lists the frequency response for this system at 35 hertz (Hz) to 20,000 Hz. The bottom frequency range that humans can hear is generally around 20 Hz.

This means that the Logitech z523 speaker system does a good job of covering the full range important for watching movies, playing games, and listening to music.

Satellite Speakers
The Logitech z523 system comes with two (2) satellite speakers. Each speaker is 9.5 watts. There is a volume and bass control knob easily accessible from one of the satellite speakers. This makes control audio very easy.

The downside is that there isn’t a treble control. Luckily, the speakers come out of the box with a great blend between the mids and the highs, and you can control the bass independently. But it would be nice, for certain applications, to be able to control the treble.

Subwoofer Specifications
The subwoofer has a whopping 21 watts of power! This thing puts out an amazing amount of bass (if you want it).

One great feature of the subwoofer is that it is down firing. What I mean is that the speaker is actually facing towards the surface it is sitting on.

You might think this sounds strange, but it actually makes the bass have a much more dramatic effect. As the low frequencies bounce off of the surface (your carpet, hardwoods, etc.) they interact with the mids/highs coming from the satellite speakers and really fill the room nicely.

Audio Connection Options
One of the things I hate most is when I go to the store and grab a new gadget, then get home to find out I forgot a cord needed to make it work. You don’t have to worry about that with the Logitech z523 because it comes with all of the necessary cables.

The audio input options include stereo RCA cables (colored cables), a 3.5 mm primary input jack (like an iPhone or iPod), and another 3.5 mm auxiliary input. This is great because you can have use the speakers for your iPod without having to unplug the TV!

The audio output options include a 3.5 mm headphone jack. When I’m working, I keep the headphones handy because I know there will be a point that my wife will get agitated with my music…with this system, it is as simple as plugging my headphones straight into the satellite speaker. I don’t have to unplug anything or fish around the back of my desktop for the headphone jack!

Dimensions
Like I’ve said in other posts, these babies don’t take up much room at all yet put out an amazing sound. The satellite speakers measure 11.6”x3.4”x5.2” and the subwoofer measures 10”x9”x9.5”.

Logitech z523 – More than Just Forward Facing Speakers

Logitech z523You would have think that this type of audio engineering technology would be widely popular by now. The concept just makes sense.

While I’m sure that the Logitech z523 isn’t the only speaker system that has both forward and rear facing speaker horns, it sure does seem like it is the only one you can get at this price.

The great thing about having a 2.1 type audio system is that you only have three speakers and you don’t take up much room at all. Really, a subwoofer under your TV stand and a speaker on either side of the TV and you are golden.

If you are using a 2.1 system in your office then you’d most likely stick the subwoofer under your desk and put a speaker tower on either side of your monitor.

The problem with a lot of these systems is that the speaker cones are very small. As such, the angle of projection isn’t as big as compared to larger speakers. This means that you have a narrower optimum listening area.

The optimum listening area is where the intended audio blend of low, mid, and high frequencies is heard. A friend of mine has these really amazing, really expensive flat panel speakers. These things are like $8,000 for the set of two.

He is kind of a gadget geek and he built his own vintage tube amp system to play records through these puppies. I will say, when you sit directly in the middle of the “sweet spot”, you have never heard anything sound better in your life. I could literally sit there and do nothing but listen to those speakers and be content.

That being said, even with those super expensive speakers, if you go outside of that sweet spot, they will sound like garbage. Why? Because mid-range and high-range frequencies don’t emanate as well as low range sounds. So, when you are outside of this optimal area, you hear much more bass than anything else.

I probably just made that way more complicated than it needs to be, but I hope you got it. Basically, what I’m trying to say is that if you are using normal speakers, you better have them pointed directly at where you will be sitting.

When you are dealing with two towers pointed towards the couch, this really isn’t that big of an issue. You have set the system up so that the optimum listening area is where you will be setting.

However, this may not always work, depending on how you have your living area set up. For example, if you have a lounge off to the side of the couch, chances are that the person in the lounge won’t be able to hear as well.

Logitech z523 Speakers are Omni-directional

That is where the Logitech z523 speaker system comes into play. There is a driver in the front and the back of each speaker tower pushing 360 degrees of sound. This means that you are delivered a clear crisp sound no matter where you are in the room.

I think this Logitech z523 system is a great alternative while I save up for my own set of flat panel speakers. I might even hang on to the subwoofer and use it in my “dream audio system”.
